The 82 dogs taken in during the rescue overwhelmed the Humane Society of Montgomery County in Conroe, Texas - their inital stop. But dedicated workers there gave the dogs the first human contact and care they had seen in a long time.

It was a Doggie Dunkirk as every available means of transport headed for Conroe to take the dogs to waiting rescue organizations. A Conroe shelter worker, moved by the plight of the dogs, gave each an individual farewell as the first group prepared to leave for Austin.

Most of the dogs displayed obvious signs of their ordeal in severe emaciation and open wounds and sores.
